PROGRAM NOTES

"Dowsing" means "to search for hidden minerals, water, etc, by passing a forked stick over the surface of the ground, so that it might dip suddenly when brought over the right spot". One of my most vivid childhood memories in Italy is of watching a dowser searching for water; his stick started to shake uncontrollably, bent towards the ground, and finally broke.

"Dowsing" seemed a very appropriate title for my String Trio, since I decided to approach it with a searching mind. All I had was an opening phrase, and I wanted to see where it would lead me if I simply let myself be guided by my instinct and inspiration. To my surprise, the process of composing was quick and natural. I see now that the piece conveys very well that sense of "quest" on the spiritual, personal and compositional level that music more and more seems to be assuming for me.

PROGRAMMA DI SALA

"Dowsing" in inglese significa "rabdomanzia". Uno dei ricordi piu' vividi della mia infanzia e' l'aver visto la bacchetta di un rabdomante in cerca d'acqua cominciare a tremare in modo incontrollabile, piegarsi verso terra e infine spezzarsi.

La rabdomanzia mi e' sembrata un'ottima metafora per il mio pezzo, dato che il mio approccio e' stato quello di essere semplicemente "aperto". Avevo una frase iniziale, e ho provato a lasciarmi guidare dall'istinto e dall'ispirazione (parole spesso pericolose di questi tempi). Con mia grande sorpresa, il processo compositivo e' stato sia naturale che veloce. Adesso, a lavoro ultimato, mi rendo conto di quanto questo pezzo sia intriso di quella mia "ricerca" a livello spirituale, personale e compositivo, che la musica sembra assumere sempre di piu'.
