PROGRAM NOTES

Elegia del Silenzio (Elegy of Silence), for trumpet and vibraphone (or trumpet and piano), was composed in New York during Thanksgiving of 2001. I have always felt that Thanksgiving is a very special holiday, because, since it is not religious, it is the only holiday which is loved and celebrated by everybody in the U.S. While I was writing the piece I kept thinking that this year, for the thousands of families affected by the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Thanksgiving would be an occasion for further grief and mourning. These thoughts had a deep influence on the music I wrote. The title refers to the eerie silence, both uncanny and unusual, that dominated the streets of Manhattan in my neighborhood (very close to the WTC), in the days right after the attack. The piece was commissioned by Italian trumpet player Ivano Ascari for the recording of his third solo CD.

Elegia del Silenzio, per tromba e vibrafono (o tromba e pianoforte), e' stato composto a New York nel 2001, nel periodo della festa americana del Ringraziamento (Thanksgiving). In un paese come gli Stati Uniti, in cui miriadi di razze, religioni e tradizioni culturali convivono e si mescolano, la festa del Ringraziamento e' particolare perche', essendo l'unica festa completamente laica, non e' collegata a nessuna delle diverse tradizioni religiose dei vari gruppi etnici, ed e' pertanto amata e celebrata da tutti. La tradizione e' quella di passarla con la famiglia riunita. Mentre scrivevo il pezzo non potevo fare a meno di pensare che quest'anno, per le migliaia di famiglie colpite dall'attentato alle Torri Gemelle, la festa sarebbe stata un'ulteriore occasione di lutto e dolore. Questo mio stato d'animo ha profondamente influenzato la musica che ho scritto. Il titolo si riferisce al profondo e insolito silenzio, strano e irreale, che dominava le strade di Manhattan nel mio quartiere, molto vicino al World Trade Center, nei giorni immediatamente successivi all'attentato. Il pezzo e' stato commissionato dal trombettista Ivano Ascari, in occasione della registrazione del suo terzo CD come solista.
