PROGRAM NOTES

Flexible Desires, for solo piano, was commissioned by pianist Joanne Chang with funds provided by the City University of New York. The work is cast in a single movement and presents two sets of very contrasting materials; the first one is harsh, rhythmic, dissonant and mostly contrapuntally based, while the second is lyrical, smoother, consonant and mostly harmonically based.

The whole work grows organically from the development and the superimposition of these two thematic ideas, and also showcases that alternation and tension between tonality and atonality that is an increasingly recurrent feature of my music. The title is a reference to the fact that in music (as well as in life in general) the desire toward consonance always has to come to terms with the desire toward dissonance and vice versa.

Flexible Desires, per pianoforte, è stato commissionato dalla pianista Joanne Chang con fondi provenienti dalla City University of New York. Il lavoro si articola in un unico movimento,  e presenta due materiali molto contrastanti fra loro. Il primo dal carattere aspro, ritmico, dissonante, e di natura prevalentemente contrappuntistica, il secondo più espressivo, delicato, consonante, e di natura prevalentemente armonica.

Il lavoro nel suo complesso si sviluppa organicamente dalla elaborazione e sovrapposizione di queste due idee tematiche, mettendo anche in mostra quella alternanza e tensione tra tonalità e atonalità che sempre di più appare come una caratteristica ricorrente della mia musica. Il titolo fa riferimento al fatto che in musica (così come nella vita in generale) il desiderio di consonanza deve sempre fare i conti con il desiderio  di dissonanza e viceversa.
