PROGRAM NOTES
"Until a Petal Hit the Ground", for flute and piano,
was written at the end of summer 2001. Each of three movements,
which can be performed with or without interruption, tries to
evoke very specific moods. The first, "Like a Quiet River",
is meditative and calm; the second, "Like a Rainy Forest",
is more melancholic, opening with a mournful piano solo and closing
with a flute solo. The third, "Like a Kitten at Play",
is fast and playful. The piece was commissioned by flutist Joanna
Goldstein and is dedicated to her father Larry, an amateur pianist,
to celebrate his birthday (hence the playfully "twisted"
quotation of the universally known tune that closes the piece).
The title comes from a poem by W. B. Yeats.
PROGRAMMA DI SALA
"Until a Petal Hit the Ground", per flauto e pianoforte,
