PROGRAM NOTES

My love for the visual arts dates from my childhood, when my parents used to take me to admire the frescos and the paintings that are almost everywhere in Italy. In writing Quattro Quadri (which means "four paintings" in Italian) I had four of my favorite 20th century paintings in mind. The music was inspired by the paintings and I tried to capture and recreate the emotions they stirred in me. The four paintings (each corresponding to a movement) are: "Broadway Boogie Woogie", by Piet Mondrian (a whirlwind of bright geometric colors recalling the frenzy of life in New York); "Le Chateau des Pyrenees", by Rene' Magritte (an enormous rock with a castle on top, suspended on a wavy ocean, an image of tension and energy); "Portrait of my Brother", by Lucian Freud, (a spooky close-up of a face whose eyes are enigmatic and uncanny); "Nighthawks", by Edward Hopper (a squalid diner in the wee hours, with an array of lonely characters).

L'amore che ho per la pittura risale alla mia infanzia, quando i miei genitori mi portavano ad ammirare gli affreschi e le pitture che in Italia sono sparsi un po' dappertutto. Nel comporre "Quattro Quadri" mi sono ispirato a quattro fra i miei quadri favoriti del ventesimo secolo, cercando anche di catturare e ricreare le emozioni che le immagini suscitano in me. I quattro quadri (ognuno corrispondente a un movimento) sono: "Broadway Boogie Woogie", di Piet Mondrian (un geometrico turbinio di colori che richiama alla mente la frenesia di New York); "Le Chateau des Pyrenees", di Rene' Magritte (un' enorme roccia, carica di tensione ed energia, con un castello in cima, sospesa sopra un oceano tempestoso); "Portrait of my Brother", di Lucian Freud (un inquietante primo piano di un volto dagli occhi impenetrabili); "Nigthawks", di Edward Hopper (una squallida tavola calda a notte fonda, popolata da personaggi solitari).
