PROGRAM NOTES
My second String Quartet, with female voice (and entitled
"of impermanence"), was composed in 1990, during a
typically humid New York summer. It was a really beautiful period
of my life, rich with personal discoveries and accomplishments.
It is then sort of surprising to realize that, due to the usual
more or less "unknown" subconscious reasons, the piece
turned out to have a rather meditative and gloomy character.
This is in part due to the nature of the texts, by Italian poet
Franca Melchiori, which deal with the impermanence of life and
the transience of things. The third poem was written for the
poet's late husband, renown painter Antonio Fasan, who was at
the time struggling against sickness and old age. Franca Melchiori,
who died in 1997, was an erudite, moving writer and a ravenous
cat lover (they are the principal characters of her posthumous
memoir). She also happened to be my aunt.
mia zia.
