PROGRAM NOTES
I wrote this piece in Florence in the summer of 1991. Summer
nights there are hot and windless, and the sky is immobile and
cloudless. My apartment was on the top floor and every time I
looked out of the window, while working at my desk, I had a beautiful
view of the moon. I decided therefore to dedicate my piece to
this mysterious and ineffable presence that has both inspired
and accompanied solitary nocturnal thoughts for thousands of
years.
The piece is divided in four movements (Waxing Moon, Full Moon,
Small Crescent, Waning Moon) which follow rather closely the
Classical scheme: Sonata form in the first and last movements,
a slow rhapsodic Adagio, and a fast third movement consisting
of Scherzo-Trio-Scherzo.
PROGRAMMA DI SALA
Questo pezzo e' stato composto a Firenze, durante l'estate
del 1991. Le notti estive fiorentine sono calde e senza vento,
e il cielo e' immobile e limpido. Il mio appartamento era all'ultimo
piano e ogni volta che guardavo dalla finestra, mentre lavoravo,
potevo ammirare la luna, presenza misteriosa e ineffabile, che
ispira e accompagna i nostri pensieri notturni da migliaia di
anni. E' stato quindi naturale "dedicarle" questo lavoro.
Il pezzo e' diviso in quattro movimenti ( Luna Crescente,
Luna Piena, Piccola Falce, Luna Calante) che seguono abbastanza
da vicino lo schema classico; forma sonata nel primo e ultimo
movimento, un adagio di carattere rapsodico, e un terzo movimento
veloce che consiste di Scherzo-Trio-Scherzo.
