PROGRAM NOTES
As a child growing up in Italy I used to show the world my
"precocious talent" in music by banging on pots, cans
and any other available surface around the house. As one can
imagine, my parents were not particularly enthusiastic about
my performances, and I grew up with my father telling me (or
more often yelling): "Non sbachetar!", which in the
Venetian dialect means "Don't drum!". Years later I
had a career as a jazz drummer and symphonic percussionist. When
I finally devoted myself to composition and was asked to write
a piece for the percussion quartet of which I was a member in
Florence, "Sbachetar!" ("Drumming!") seemed
to me both an appropriate title and a friendly revenge towards
my parents, who had become in the meantime supporters of my music.
The piece, in three sections, dates from a period in which I
was interested in repetition and in using few pitches.
PROGRAMMA DI SALA
Da bambino avevo l'abitudine di esibire al mondo il mio "talento
precoce" come musicista sbatacchiando su tegami, pentole
e qualsiasi altra superficie disponibile in casa. E' facile immaginare
quanto entusiasmo cio' suscitasse sui miei genitori, ragione
per cui sono cresciuto con il suono di mio padre che mi ripeteva
(o meglio urlava) in dialetto veneto: "Non sbachetar!".
Anni dopo suonare la batteria e le percussioni sinfoniche divenne
il mio lavoro, e quando decisi di dedicarmi alla composizione,
e mi fu chiesto di scrivere un pezzo per il quartetto di percussioni
del quale facevo parte a Firenze, "Sbachetar!" mi sembro'
essere sia un buon titolo che un'amichevole vendetta nei confronti
dei miei genitori, i quali nel frattempo erano diventati sostenitori
della mia musica. Il pezzo, in tre sezioni, risale a un periodo
in cui ero interessato a lavorare con poche note, usando figurazioni
ritmicamente stabili.
