PROGRAM NOTES
Making The Frozen Serpent Dance, for saxophone quartet, was
written with the intent to pay an affectionate tribute to some
of the music that played an important role in my artistic evolution.
In addition to the presence of harmonies and scales typical of
jazz, something not unusual in my music, the work presents references
to musical worlds often rather distant from each other, especially
in the final movement. The title comes from a poem by Robert
Lowell.
The work is structured in three movements: 1) Presto
with anxiety (The Serpent), which emphasizes the rhythmical and
timbral qualities of the saxes. 2) Ballad with languor (The Frozen),
a ballad in the jazz tradition, which emphasizes the expressive
and harmonic qualities of the saxes. 3) Finale with energy, (The
Dance), which revisits, not without a certain dose of irony,
various musical influences that have enriched my musical path
through the years.
PROGRAMMA DI SALA
"Making The Frozen Serpent Dance" (Facendo ballare
il serpente congelato), per quartetto di sassofoni, e' stato
scritto con la precisa intenzione di rendere un omaggio affettuoso
ad alcune delle musiche che hanno rivestito una importanza particolare
nella mia evoluzione artistica. A parte la presenza generalizzata
di scale e armonie tipiche
del jazz, cosa peraltro non nuova nel mio lavoro, il lavoro presenta,
soprattutto nel movimento finale, riferimenti a mondi musicali
spesso anche molto distanti tra loro. Il titolo viene da una
poesia di Robert Lowell.
ll lavoro e' articolato in tre movimenti:
1) Presto ansioso (Il Serpente), che mette in evidenza le qualita'
ritmiche e timbriche dei sassofoni. 2) Ballad con languore (Congelato),
una ballad nella tradizione jazz, che mette in evidenza le qualita'
espressive ed armoniche dei sassofoni. 3) Finale energico (La
danza), che rivisita, non senza una certa dose di ironia, varie
influenze musicali che hanno arricchito il mio percorso musicale
attraverso gli anni.
